EBEC Balkan 2017

EBEC Balkan is one of the fifteen regional rounds of EBEC, which is, nowadays, organized by six Local BEST groups: Belgrade, Novi Sad, Nis, Skoplje, Mostar, Podgorica. This year, it wil be held in Mostar. It is going to last 4 days, from May 5th to 8th. EBEC Balkan is the project that demands a lot from one student – organizing something that gathers 48 competitors from the region is a great challenge.

history

Therefore, the realization of it is only possible with the support of universities, different institutions, companies, medias and the others who recognize the enthusiasm of these students and realize how important this competition can be in developing one student’s life. Improvement of engineering practical and theoretical skills, building a team spirit and making the students think unique and be creative, are only some of the benefits of this project. Among the most important is making the connection between the ones in the international.

History of EBEC Balkan

The idea of organizing an Engineering Competition in Europe developed in 2002, as some BEST members were inspired with a Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC). It was introduced at the following General Meeting and soon initiated at BEST universities. When first organized in October 2003, current EBEC was called BEST European Engineering Competition (BEEC). It took place in Belgium with 60 participants from all over Europe. Over the following years the categories also changed. There were: Team Design, Negotiations, Case Study, Debates. Finally, Team Design and Case Study became the official ones, and in 2008 it was declared that this competition is going to be named as EBEC (European BEST Engineering Competition).

EBEC consists of three rounds: local, regional and final. Local rounds are organized on 88 Europe universities; winning teams then continue competition on regional rounds (there are 15 of them), and finally, on the final round, the best one of the whole Europe is chosen.

EBEC Balkan was first organized in 2010 by a group of students from BEST Belgrade, among whom were Matija Lukić and Marija Gogić. The name in that period was BuREC (Balkan Regional EBEC Competiton). But how, actually, the whole idea of making this project appeared and how was it developed? In the summer of 2009, when the first final round of EBEC was held in Ghent, a group of individuals from BEST Belgrade recognized the potential of this kind of competition. LBG Belgrade initialized the organization of engineering competitons in the region. This meant that six LBGs (Belgrade, Nis, Novi Sad, Patras, Skopje and Sofia) are organizing a project which was a great way of making a connection between them. First Balkan Engineering Competition in 2010 got the support of companies, national televisions and even more local medias. Unfortunately, how fast the project was created, so quickly it disappeared. The following year the event wasn’t held due to the financial difficulties. It took several years for the project to be reincarnated, this time under a new name – EBEC Balkan.
